Ever since childhood art has always played a part in Daphne’s life yet the inspiration to draw and paint only became a regular activity in later years.Apart from art classes at school Daphne had little formal training with a brief period during the 1970’s when she had the opportunity to learn oil painting at the Art Students League of New York. Two of her teachers were the notable Robert Phillip and David Leffel who nowadays is internationally recognized as a modern master of chiaroscuro.
On returning to Australia in 1980 Daphne neglected her art. It was two years after he husband passed away in 1997 that she began to paint again. Returning home to the Gold coast in 1999 she joined the Royal Qld Art Society at Broadbeach and attends life drawing once or twice a week there and is a committee member of the RQAS.What subjects is Daphne passionate about? It is the timeless beauty of the horse, the human figure and portraiture. As a teenager Daphne had horses of her own and during school holidays competed in the local shows and rode every day on her parents property. Now that she no longer has regular contact with horses Daphne expresses her closeness and understanding of them through the mediums of oil, acrylic and pastel. It is this lifelong love of animals and respect for the natural world that keeps her motivated.
Daphne exhibits and sells her work through the RQAS gallery and selected shows around the Gold Coast and has won numerous awards. Recently she went further afield showing her work at Blackall Qld and the Sunshine Coast with successful results. Daphne is a member of the Gold Coast Turf club and goes out to the racetrack whenever she can to refresh her memory and take in the atmosphere of excitement on race day. The beauty of the thoroughbred Andalusian and Lipizzaner inspire Daphne to continuously strive for improvement and professional quality in her work.Working mostly at home Daphne still attends workshops and demonstrations that she considers beneficial to her development as an artist. She accepts commissions for portraits of horses and people in acrylic, oil or pastels.
